I've often wondered what other people think of when they think of a "soul".
My interpretation is that a soul is simply the sentience of a person, but not sentience so much as complex emotion and such... I'm not really sure. Seeing as I'm an atheist, I don't believe in a soul in the Christian sense anyway.
What are other peoples' thoughts on a soul, or lack thereof?

I'd kinda agree with you.
If I were to try to explain what I think, I'd say it is you. who you are, minus the body. That is all, no more, no less.

Yeah, that's my view, basically... The body is just a shell and a life support system for your brain, and your brain is where *you* are. But more than that for humans, because we have something other animals with similar construction do not: self-awareness and intelligence. Whether this means we have some spritual thing that they do not, I am not sure...
One interesting thing about a scientific view of the soul, is that the more we learn about the brain, the more we realize we don't know too much of what's actually going on up there. Some scientists say we wouldn't even be capable of intelligence/sentience with *just* our brains, and they suggest that our complex thought processes are actually manifestations of quantum functions.
Either way, there is more to us than just our physical bodies, like you said.

I've often wondered something about souls. What about the mentally retarded? Their brain is damaged, but is their soul also damaged? I don't really understand that.

I kinda believe the soul is a symbiote with people that provides strength to its mutual lifeform. So basically
Stronger soul=stronger person
And with retardation, I believe they can still have a strong soul, but their body was born without the capacity to show it

I believe that the soul is a collection of memories, things we've learned, people we love, things weve experienced all stored in a type of back up file. So if one day we were put into a coma we would still be there. The quintessence of a person all rolled up into a neat little package.
stupid question now. do you believe in ghosts? would a ghost not be a soul trapped without a body?

That's what I would think it to be...
